Watusi are medium-sized animals, with long, large-diameter horns, they attract attention wherever they appear. These regal animals can easily trace their ancestry back more than 6,000 years and have often been referred to as “cattle of kings.” Horns are long and symmetrical, with a base large and proportional to horn length. Lyre and circular shapes are preferable to flat. The Ankole-Watusi is medium in size, with cows weighing 900 – 1200 pounds and bulls weighing 1000 – 1600 pounds. Newborn calves weigh 30 – 50 pounds. This small birth-weight makes Ankole-Watusi bulls useful for breeding to first-calf-heifers of other breeds.
In order to breed and grow cattle in the heat and frequent droughts of Northern Queensland in Australia’s hot tropical north several cattlemen set about crossing Zebu cattle (Bos indicus) with Shorthorn and Shorthorn/Devon. The breed contains approximately 50 percent Shorthorn and 50 percent Brahman bloodlines. It is spread throughout most states of Australia, although they are found mainly in Queensland.
The breed is basically red in color, but can vary from a golden honey color to dark red. Droughtmasters are either polled or horned with the majority of cattle being polled. Their heat and tick tolerance, excellent fertility, ease of calving and quiet temperament give this breed a good reputation in Australia.The ‘Belties’, like six other color variants, presumably originated centuries ago from the pure black Galloway. They were mentioned as early as the start of the 19th century.
They are medium to small framed cattle with a broad, flat head. Neck is of medium length. Deep torso with short, clean legs. Fine bone structure. Thick, soft, long hair, especially in winter. The Tarentaise breed’s home is in the rugged Savoie region of France. In France, no other cattle graze where the Tarentaise graze. Charolais, Maine-Anjou and Limousin are raised in Basin regions, where the land is more lush. Salers are native to a mountainous region, but it is not as mountainous as the home of the Tarentaise.
In the early 1970s, Dr. Ray Woodward of Miles City, Montana, was director of the beef program for American Breeders Service. Woodward was looking for a breed that would work on commercial cows in the U.S. while retaining milking ability and, most importantly, avoid the calving and fertility problems of the then known “exotics.” He found the answer with Tarentaise. The first Tarentaise bull calf arrived at a Canadian quarantine station in 1972. His name was Alpin, he weighed 1650 pounds at 30 months, and he generated so much excitement and semen sales that soon after the Canadian Tarentaise Association formed. In 1973, the American Tarentaise Association was formed.
Blonde d’Aquitaine
The Blonde d’Aquitaine breed originated in the Garonne valley and the Pyrenees mountains area in the Aquitaine district of France.Blondes short smooth hair is usually wheat colored, but can range from almost white to brown. They are known for their lean muscling, high growth rate, docility and calving ease due to a high tail setting, large pelvic area and light bone. The average weight of mature females is 1600-1900 pounds and bulls 2500-2800 pounds. These are big blondes!
They are the third largest breed in France after the Limousin and Charolais breeds. First imported into the United States in 1972.
